One of Bill Laswell's many projects. Teaming up with producer Tetsu Inoue among others, Laswell broadens his ambient repertoire with crystalline ventures into a more ethereal musical realm. Lassoing a herd of disparate sound -- such as Asian melodies and jets flying overhead to the sounds of dripping water -- Automaton reveals and quells its anxiety simultaneously. The works are less cohesive songs than lengthy sound intrigues that make intimate acquaintance with dub, found sound, and basic beats, and eventually -- and satisfyingly -- draw out their many silent secrets.
