Clara Ward and the Ward Singers created some of the strongest, pop-minded gospel music of the '50s & '60s. Aretha Franklin has repeatedly stated that Clara Ward was one of her earliest inspirations. The group caught flak from the church for performing at venues in Las Vegas and Disneyland. The group performed for President Lyndon Johnson and appeared on numerous television shows. The group's biggest hit was in the mid-'50s with "Surely God Is Able."
