The band formed from the ashes of the Burlington, Vermont-based band Guppyboy when a few members moved to Brooklyn, N.Y.
The Essex Green were part of the acclaimed Elephant 6 collective, a group of influential indie bands in the 1990s.
Other Elephant 6 collaborators were Neutral Milk Hotel, the Olivia Tremor Control and Of Montreal.
The Essex Green released their debut in 1999 and followed that up with albums on Merge Records in '03 and '06.
