Turntabilism crews come up with some strange names. First it was the Invisbl Scratch Piklz, then the X-ecutioners|, and now the Immortal Fader Fyters. On Saturday at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts, P-Trix of L.A.'s Immortal Fader Fyters was crowned 1999's DMC US champion.
Jersey was also well represented at the contest, with the second and third place finishers hailing from the Garden State. Spictakular of Jersey City's Allies & Krash Dummiez crews was the first runner-up; third place went to 1997 DMC US Champion, Slyce, from Teaneck, NJ placed third.
The contest was judged by DJ Cue of Cues Records; Rhettmatic of the Beat Junkies; Billy Jam from Hip Hop Slam Records; Bevan from Turntablism.com, GrandMaster Caz and DJ Apollo, a founding member of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz.
And while the crowd got a chance to see a new champion crowned, they also got to see turntablism's old guard get their props. Legendary Philly scratch kingpin and 1988 DMC Champ DJ Cash Money, and the UK-based Scratch Perverts performed and Apollo and Grandmaster Caz were inducted into the Technics DMC Hall of Fame.
Turntablism wasn't the evening's only attraction as Bay Area favorites Rasco, Planet Asia and dance team, Medea Sirkas also threw down.
If Spictakular is salty about his second place finish, he will have a chance to avenge that loss at the World DMC championships which will take place on September 17 and 18 at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom. During the team championship's, his team the Allies will face off against P-Trix's Immortal Fader Fyters.
This year's solo finals will feature competitors from 30 countries attempting to dethrone Allies member DJ Craze. There will also be performances from The Rock Steady Crew, X-ecutioners and the Anomolies.
History is also being made this year, as the Disco Music Club World Championship's are, for the first time in their 13-year history, being held in the birthplace of hip-hop, New York City. For further info peep DMC's website, www.dmcworld.com. - Adam Matthews
