Synonymous with the term U.K. Garage, 2-Step is best defined as the union of Jungle's softer side with the edgier face of Garage. The style went through a brief incarnation as Speed Garage at the hands of turntable superstars such as Armand Van Helden. Later, the careful handling of House mainstay Todd Edwards and the innovation of Romanthony established the sound of 2-Step, which lays diva or raga vocals over crisp, syncopated rhythms influenced by Drum 'n' Bass. Basically a style defined by DJs, 2-Step tracks often flirt with the pop charts, and can mostly be found on CD compilations, 12-inch singles, and white label bootlegs of R&B remixes. Darlings of the genre include Artful Dodger, Wookie and mainstream favorite MJ Cole.
